Japan is a big market for electrical appliances. Japanese consumers concern very much on the safety of them. Starting 1st April 2001, the Japanese Electrical Appliance Material Control Law (DENTORI) was officially renamed to Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law (DENAN). The new law standardized the use of PSE mark, and strengthened the punitive measures against importers.
Product Safety of Electrical Appliance and Materials (PSE) certification is a compulsory regulation for the entry of electrical appliance into Japanese market, and is a very important contents in DENAN. According to DENAN, the Japanese government categorizes electrical appliance into "Specified products" and "Non-specified products". There are 115 products under "Specified products" and 338 products under "Non-specified products". PSE was made up of two parts: Safety and EMC. All products under "Specified products" must obtain a certification from the an accredited third-party certification agency recognized by the Japanese Ministry of Economic, Trade and Industry, and bear the diamond shape PSE mark. All "Non-specified products" need to self-declare or apply for third party certification, and bear the round shape PSE mark.
